Three shots – Ernst Heminway

Hemingway cut away the superfluous facts.

It takes place in Nick’s head

It’s up to the reader to interpret the story.

This story prepares the reader for reading Indian Camp

If you omit this story, then Indian Camp will start in medias res

Three shots tells us what’s on Nick’s mind

Tasks:

Characterize Nick:

Fear: Scared to be alone in the woods

The father calls him “a coward” but defends him by saying he is not that old.

Uncle George thinks Nick isn’t old enough to be in the wood.

Afraid of death – afraid of the unknown which is irrational fear.

A child

Themes

Fear (in general)

Why did Papa omit the original beginning

The style/narrative technique is different

Three shots is mostly interior monologue

We know that is on Nick’s mind

The themes are different: (1) three shots: fear (2) Indian Camp growing up growing independent

Themes are expressed explicitly in Three shots, buy only implicitly in Indian Camp

It is not necessary to understand the story

The way the father raises Nick is similar to the way Hemingway writes

They both show or “create” and refrain from explaining and describing.

The reader and Nick must both reach their own conclusions.
